Expansion of park space in growth areas and neighborhoods
| Large parks will be located in the intense areas of growth and
small parks in established neighborhoods. Overall park and green space acreage will
be doubled from 1,100 to 2,200 acres.
Creation of visual green spaces
Medians and “leftover” parcels of land will be heavily planted with trees
to visually soften paving and utilities while adding to Mobile’s tree canopy.
Linking of parks and green spaces
| Paths added along existing streets, drainage rights-of-way, etc.
will physically link most green spaces and provide over 50 miles of biking/walking
opportunities. Visually, parks and green spaces will be connected through street
tree plantings along major streets and proposed paths.
Acquisition of waterfront areas
| These areas will address the strong public desire for water
and waterfront access, including Mobile Bay and various rivers, streams, and lakes.
Protection of environmentally important areas
| Property will be acquired to protect existing watersheds of Mobile’s
creeks and rivers. Unique habitats will be acquired and preserved, including wetlands,
bogs, pine savannahs, etc. This will include abandoned or polluted industrial and
commercial sites (brownfields) that would be restored into public green spaces. |
Acquisition of park land in the County
| Property outside the city limits will be acquired to keep in step with the future growth in the County.
