Green Space Master Plan for
the City of Mobile

A blueprint for a more livable and beautiful City

In 1999, ReBloom, a project of the Mobile Tricentennial, commissioned a Green Space Master Plan for the City of Mobile to provide a guideline for the next three hundred years. Now adopted by the City Council, this plan will be a blueprint for the long term implementation of parks and green spaces.

The Green Space Master Plan defines a general “greening” concept for the future establishment of parks and green spaces in Mobile. The plan incorporates existing plans and developments by City and other agencies. It will be implemented to keep up with the ever-expanding development in the community. As the Plan is developed, more and more Mobilians will find easier access to shade, water, and recreation.

The plan calls for :

Expansion of park space in growth areas and neighborhoods
Large parks will be located in the intense areas of growth and small parks in established neighborhoods. Overall park and green space acreage will be doubled from 1,100 to 2,200 acres.
Creation of visual green spaces
Medians and “leftover” parcels of land will be heavily planted with trees to visually soften paving and utilities while adding to Mobile’s tree canopy.
Linking of parks and green spaces
Paths added along existing streets, drainage rights-of-way, etc. will physically link most green spaces and provide over 50 miles of biking/walking opportunities. Visually, parks and green spaces will be connected through street tree plantings along major streets and proposed paths.
Acquisition of waterfront areas
These areas will address the strong public desire for water and waterfront access, including Mobile Bay and various rivers, streams, and lakes.
Protection of environmentally important areas
Property will be acquired to protect existing watersheds of Mobile’s creeks and rivers. Unique habitats will be acquired and preserved, including wetlands, bogs, pine savannahs, etc. This will include abandoned or polluted industrial and commercial sites (brownfields) that would be restored into public green spaces.
Acquisition of park land in the County
Property outside the city limits will be acquired to keep in step with the future growth in the County.

The initial phase of the Plan will be a Linear Park along one side of the Montlimar Canal between Airport and Michael Boulevards. This phase has been initiated by Dog River Clearwater Revival, a watershed protection group. They are working with a local company to secure funding for a bike/hike path in this park.

The implementation of the plan will benefit all area citizens and visitors to Mobile. Many conservation, fitness and community groups have committed support to the development of the Master Plan. ReBloom will form a coalition of such groups as partners with the City to seek funding and implementation of the plan in the future.
