Traditional Southern and China roses
Rosa chinensis, early tea hybrids and others
Chinas and early teas are among the most dependable roses for Southern gardens, and make neat, easy-to-care-for landscapes shrubs.

R. Caldwell Pink

R. palustris
Blooms: Traditional rose colors in red, white and pink tones, though some show yellow and peach pastel shades. Most have deep, multi-petalled blooms: some have a single row of unusually large petals. Peak blooms in spring and fall, with scattered blooms throughout summer.
Leaves: Healthy, with no disease or insect problems, densely covering the shrub.
Height: Most grow 4 to 5 feet tall. Some, like Mutabilis, can grow much taller to 7 or 8 feet.
Soils: Almost any soil will suit the old Chinas. But good soil - moist, but well-drained, enriched with organic matter - will produce more handsome shrubs.
Light: Most tolerate and bloom best in full sun: a few, like Sombreuil, will bloom with a half day's sun.
Uses: Use these roses as you would azaleas; most can be used as neat shrubs even along the foundation of the house.

Ornamental banana
Musa species

Bush sages
Salvia leucantha, Salvia mexicana and Salvia madrensis
Showy, shrub-like perennials with bold, often showy, foliage and stems and large hummingbird-attracting flowers.

Salvia leucantha

Salvia madrensis
Blooms: Midnight blue, purple or yellow, depending on species or cultivar. These salvia species bloom best in the fall months, and sometimes in the spring.
Leaves: Medium-large, showy, typically heart-shaped.
Height: S. leucantha typically grows 4 feet tall: S. mexicana, usually to 5 feet tall and almost as wide: S. madrensis, 7feet tall, 3 to 4 feet wide.
Soils: Very well-drained soils are necessary. Very drought-tolerant.
Light: The more sun the better.
Uses: As large, shrub-like perennials mixed into the flower border. Can be outstanding planted in back of China roses.

Red spider lily
Lycoris radiata
Perhaps the best, and most reliable fall-blooming bulb for the South. Try to find Southern sources, as spider lilies sold nationally are different from out old heirlooms, and often perform poorly here.
Blooms: An airy crown of deep pinkish red to carmine blooms on naked stalks from late August through September.
Leaves: INconspicuous, grass-like, emarging in late fall and dying down in late spring, long before the blooms emerge. Height: 18 inches high.
Soils : Very adaptable.
Light: Very adaptable, but maximum sun will be needed in winter, when the leaves emerge.
Uses: Use them anywhere, in flower borders, around shrubs, even in the lawn.
