Native "Honeysuckle" Azaleas

These azaleas, generally blooming from late March through April, are very hardy and quite spectacular in Mobile. They are best treated as compact specimen "trees" (they typically grow 8-10 feet tall in 10 years) and should be planted in good azalea soil in partial shade. The following species grow and bloom consistently well here:

Coastal flame azalea - R. austrinum - orange to yellow flowers, fragrant, blooms March or early April
Piedmont azalea - R. canescens - white-pink flowers, fragrant, blooms March or early April

Alabama azalea - R. alabamense - pure white flowers with a yellow blotch, lemony fragrance, blooms mid-April
Plumleaf azalea - R. prunifolium - red to orange flowers, usually blooms in mid-summer
Summersweet azalea - R. viscosum or R. serrulatum - pinkish white flowers, very fragrant, usually blooms in mid-summer.

A number of honeysuckle azalea hybrids were developed in Mobile. These include such cultivars as TaylorMaid, and the following hybrid series
Aromi hybrids : Large blooms, usually fragrant, in a wide variety of colors and bloom forms

Tom Dodd III's Confederate series: Large blooms, usually fragrant, often with intense red, orange and gold tones, and some pastel pinks
