An ornamental and showy native vine that provides year round interest in the yard.
Blooms: Spring through summer. The flowers are tube-shaped, about 2" long, coral red or bright orange on the outside and yellow on the inside. Flowers are followed by orange red berries, about a quarter inch in diameter. Very attractive to hummingbirds.Several cultivars are available from specialty nurseries. Some of the more common ones include "Alabama Crimson" with bright red flowers, "Magnifica" with 2-inch scarlet flowers with a yellow interior and "Sulphurea" with pure yellow flowers.
Leaves: 1 - 3 inches. Glossy, dark green upper surface and a pale silvery green lower surface.
Height: Vigorous twining stems up to 15 feet long; shorter when growing in dry, sunny areas.Prune coral honeysuckle back in the winter to increase flowering. Don't over-fertilize.
Soils: Tolerant of drought.
Light: Flowers best in sun, but is tolerant of some shade.
Uses: Coral honeysuckle thrives in containers or in the garden. Fences and trellis.
